What makes something newsworthy vs. only sensational? In my opinion, newsworthy articles are ones that have human interest, timeliness, impact, and conflict. An example of a newsworthy article would be revolving around the Russia-Ukraine war. News aims to inform and educate, providing valuable insights into significant events or developments. News articles focus on facts and contribute to public understanding. These types of articles are trustworthy and knowledgeable regarding current events.
Articles that are focused on sensationalism often prioritize dramatic or provocative elements to capture attention without necessarily offering balanced information. Many popular gossip blogs would be examples of this type of article, TMZ, POPSUGAR, and Buzznet. I feel people label these type of articles "fake news". Sensationalism articles focus on high-profile divorces or a controversial public statement made by a well-known figure. These types of articles prioritize shock value or entertainment over substance. Magazines in the grocery store check-out lines do a great job at grabbing peoples attention with sensationalized headlines and speculative reporting.
